Thailand Crown Prince Leads 99,999 on ‘Bike For Dad’

Thailand Crown Prince HRH Maha Vajiralongkorn yesterday (December 11,2015) led 99,999 people on a 29km-long bicycle ride around Bangkok to celebrate his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 88th birthday on December 5.

Accompanied by his daughters HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha and HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, the ‘Bike for Dad’ event followed a similar ‘Bike for Mum’ event last August to celebrate the 83rd birthday of Thailand’s Queen Sirikit.

Also joining the event were senior public servants such as Thailand Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-o-cha and the Thai cabinet as well as foreign ambassadors from 24 countries including: US ambassador Glyn Davies, British ambassador Mark Kent, Chinese ambassador Ning Fukui, French Ambassador Gilles Garachon, Japan Ambassador Shiro Sado-shima, South Korean ambassador Noh Kwang-il, Indian ambassador Harsh V Shringla.

Tens of thousands of police and military personnel were deployed along the route with 86 major roads closed from early Friday morning until evening, stranding thousands of tourists in the heart of Bangkok unable to get to the airport.

Throughout all 77 Thailand provinces and in 66 cities in 52 countries globally similar events were held to mark the ailing monarchs birthday,

Official figures show that 703,792 cyclists officially registered nationwide, while 9,805 people registered for ‘Bike for Dad’ events in foreign countries. Thailand’s Public Health Ministry recorded 528 accidents during the event nationwide.
