CCTV footage of the incident shows the white Proton Wira being refuelled by the boys mother when a fireball erupts inside the vehicle. The flames spew out of the open rear driver’s side door and ignite fuel vapour beneath the car.

The boy’s mother desperately attempts to drag him from the vehicle, but is driven away by the intense heat. She then attempts to reach the child from the opposite side of the vehicle, but finds that door locked. Returning to the open door she successfully manages to pull the child from the car, suffering burns in the process, as petrol station staff frantically search for a fire extinguisher.

According to local media reports the child, Saifuddin Ismail, was playing with a cigarette lighter that his mother kept in the car for emergencies at the time.

A Facebook post by the child’s father, Ismail Din, shows the first-grader in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (HRPZII) with severe burns covering about 15 per cent of his body.

In his post Mr Ismail hopes that his son has strength for the battle ahead and implores Allah to protect him from evil-Satan.
