00:42 | Large numbers of Thais continue to visit the royal crematorium exhibition at Sanam Luang in tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej . The exhibition is open daily until the end of this month.

02:00 | Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and cabinet members have traveled to the northeastern province of Kalasin where they distributed agricultural equipment and cattle, visited a silk exhibition, and followed up the area’s water management policy.

03:32 | Deputy prime minister Somkid Jatusripitak has instructed relevant units to collaborate to develop tourism of minor cities to equally distribute income and to support Thai youth in becoming world-class athletes. The minister also advised airlines to increase flights to various provinces.

04:45 | Deputy transport minister Pairin Chuchotethavorn has instructed the Department of Land Transport (DLT) to urgently develop seamless transport for people and reiterated the need to enforce road safety awareness.

05:50 | The Ministry of Labor (MOL) has accepted a petition from the private sector to revise the recently amended law on migrant workers claiming the fine imposed against employers is too harsh. The employers also want the minimum wage for migrant workers scrapped, and the removal of ten occupations reserved for Thais.

07:17 | The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) has launched a sequel to the Welfare Card project that will see over 40 franchise owners acting as coaches to give basic knowledge to low-income earners wanting to start small franchise business. The state-run Government Savings Bank (GSB) will provide financial assistance for would be entrepreneurs, with Bt3 billion (about US$924,000) available for loans.

08:35 | The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MOAC) has proposed to the Cabinet measures to reduce the current slump in rubber prices.

11:52 | The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has launched an online ‘Smart Village’ campaign to encourage various agencies to hold meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) in communities with tourism potential. The Smart Village project has been launched in four selected communities considered leading MICE destinations.

14:04 | Kasikorn Research Center has forecast that Bangkok residents will spend Bt29.6 billion (about US$910.20 million) over the New Year holidays, a 4 per cent increase over the same period last year. Despite the expected increase in consumer spending this year shoppers remain cautious due to rising household debt and living costs.

15:01 | United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) assistant director-general Qian Tang has paid a courtesy call on Thailand’s Minister of Education and expressed his hopes for concrete reform of the Thai education system.

16:09 | The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has held a strategic seminar on insect-borne communicable disease prevention to promote healthy lifestyles in rural areas. The DDC is determined to bring malaria rates among local communities below 5 per cent by 2021 and plans to eliminate the disease completely in 743 districts in 2018. The meeting was told elephantiasis has already been completely eliminated in Thailand.

17:51 | Chonburi Provincial Administrative Organization (CPAO) will host the 5th Lantern Parade and Art Festival this weekend at Buddha Mountain (Khao Chi Chan). The festival will pay respect to Buddha ashes, as well as honour the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Queen Sirikit, and King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.

There will be also an outdoor Khon performance by more than 100 entertainers as part of the event, which will be one of the biggest outdoor Khon dances in Thailand.
