0:38 | The 1st Division King’s Guard and Maejo University are preparing a programme to plant 450,000 marigold flowers on 50 rai (8.19 ha/ 20.24 acre) of land in Kanchanaburi Province starting August 1 so that it will blossom in time for the royal cremation on October 26.

01:39 | The Office of the National Economics and Social Development Board (NESDB) has held its annual academic meeting which attracted more than 2,000 ministers, cabinet members, high ranking government officials, representatives from private sector, and community leaders.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s keynote speech focused on speeding up national growth-related projects as part of the 12th National Economics and Social Development Plan. Meetings on the sideline were also held to discuss improving human resources, logistics systems, the farming sector, and transforming Thailand into an innovation-oriented nation.

3:05 | A committee responsible for the solution of alien workers and human trafficking in labour will request the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to postpone the enforcement of the Royal Decree on alien workers for 120-days. Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan said the postponement of the enforcement will be submitted to the cabinet and NCPO today so that the delay can be implemented immediately. About 29,000 alien workers have returned to their country following the decree.

04:40 | The current sitting of the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) has approved the report by the committee in charge of political reform which proposed an overhaul of the Parliament’s operations, including  cancelling the budget for overseas field trip; ending the funding of personal computers for all parliamentarians; and the establishment of ethical standards for parliamentarians to observe. The NRSA was told that 15 members had tendered their resignations, reducing the number of legislators to 177.

06:13 | The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) held a media briefing to explain new provisions in the  Tobacco Control Act 2017 which comes into effect tomorrow, July 5, with new provisions aimed at safeguarding Thai youth and non-smokers.

The sale of tobacco in temples, medical facilities, pharmacies, educational institutes, public parks, zoos and amusement parks is now prohibited. Additionally, corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities are banned, and retailers are banned from selling cigarettes individually. The fine for smoking in designated no smoking zones has been increased to no more Bt5,000 (about US$147).

07:47 | Minister of Industry, Uttama Sawanayon, has chaired the launch of the Pracharat campaign in Songkhla Province aimed at improving the standards of SMEs in the rubber sector. In the first phase of a Rubber Industrial Estate – also known as ‘Rubber City’ –  the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) has built ten plants on 5,000 square meters of land to accommodate SMEs in the rubber industry, which is expected to increase demand by up to 9,000 tons a year, generating Bt450 million ($13.239 mil) for farmers.

12:54 | The Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), in collaboration with the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and the National Farmers Federation (NFF), has launched a pilot programme in Sisaket Province, northeastern Thailand, aimed at transferring technology and innovation to farmers. Called InnoAgri, the programme also aims to help farmers make efficient use of advanced technology to solve agricultural problems to drive the Thai economy.

15:05 | Lumphun Province has devised a plan to cope with an expected oversupply of longan.

16:59 | The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) is maintaining the current discharge rate of the Chao Phraya Dam and three others in the Chao Phraya River Basin, and has increased the discharge rate at eight others nationally, as a results of continuous rain fall in catchment areas. Water storage levels nationwide are at 56 per cent of capacity, or some 41.89 billion cubic meters.

18:56 | Entrepreneurs from across the globe are expected begin flying into Thailand for “Startup Thailand 2017” to be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center from July 6 to 9. Speaking ahead of the event, Science and Technology Minister, Atchaka Sibunruang, said more than 300 entrepreneurs are expected to attend Startup Thailand 2017, being held under the theme of ‘Scale Up Asia’.

20:14 | Deputy prime minister Somkid Jatusripitak has witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Thai and French business communities designed to intensify cooperation and speed up investment in four areas: Agri-business, transport infrastructure, energy transition, and smart city development.
