• Thailand Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, deputy prime minister Somkid Jatusripitak,   Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister General Chatchai Sarikulya, Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, and Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana, have made a field trip to Nakhon Phanom to inspect the government’s developmental projects in the upper North-Eastern provinces where he also visited Wat Phra That Phanom, which the Cabinet last month approved proposing to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world heritage site.

• Deputy prime minister and Minister for Defence, General Prawit Wongsuwon, has said that the public should rest assured that the governments reconciliation promotion will be implemented with honesty and neutrality. He said that the sub-committee tasked with the collection of opinions and suggestions on reconciliation was only responsible for gathering opinions before presenting them to the subcommittee in charge of integrating and analysing the suggestions that will be used to implement reconciliation.

• The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has organised the first of a series of public forums to discuss energy future requirements at the Prince of Songkla University in Songkla, Southern Thailand. Attended by local administrators, civil groups, government agencies, and some residents, the forum heard from a range of stakeholders on matters such as the region’s future energy requirements, and the different options available to meet the region’s blossoming energy demands.

• The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) plans to wrap up its investigations in allegations of corruption involving Rolls-Royce and Thai Airways International before September. Individuals and witnesses from Thailand and abroad have been invited to present documents and information with contacted parties said to be cooperating with inquiry.

• Former King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s sufficiency economy strategy, along with the importance of the family unit is to be promoted as part of this year’s Family Day, the focal celebrations of which will be hosted by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (SDHS) on April 4 and 5 at the IMPACT Muang Thong Thani entertainment complex.

• Thailand’s Ministery of Public Health is providing free check-ups and vaccines to Thai Hajj Pilgrims going to Saudi Arabia. Minister of Public Health, Dr Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said three medical teams will travel to Mecca to provide assistance to the pilgrims, who will be monitored on their return for diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers).

• In an attempt to promote the consumption of milk versus alcohol during the upcoming Songkran holidays Thailand’s Ministry of Agricultural Cooperatives (Mac) has elicited the cooperation of various stakeholders to reduce the price of UHT and pasteurised milk by between 5 and 40 per cent at more than 2,000 retail outlets nationwide from April 1 to April 15. Labelled ‘smart milk, smart drink’, the ministry aims to run the promotion at major festivals and events throughout the year in an to raise milk consumption from the current level of 14 litres per person per year (PPPY) to 20 litres PPPY.

• The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) held a celebration to welcome passengers on the maiden Thai Airways International (Thai) direct flight, between Beijing and Phuket, TG685. Chinese tourists account for the largest number of inbound tourists to Phuket with more than 2.25 million visiting the island in 2015. Thai now operates four direct flights per week between Beijing and Phuket.

• Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (Mac) has hosted a conference attended by representatives of other Asean member nations to discuss combating illegal fishing and to draft a policy to implement a sustainable fishing industry. The results of the meeting will be presented to the 39th Asean Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry meeting to be hosted in September this year by Thailand.

• Thailand permanent secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives (Mac),Theerapat Prayurasiddh, said an inspection of Thailand’s fisheries industries by a EU delegation had received praise on the reforms implemented in the wake of being issued a ‘yellow card’ warning almost two years ago. The team recommended a more inclusive fisheries management plan be implemented to ensure sustainability and to help ensure that practices now stamped out do not return.

• Thailand Science and Technology Minister Atchaka Sibunruang and the deputy director general of the Public Relation Department (PRD), Charoon Chaisorn, have addressed the commencement of a media ‘fam trip’ organised by the PRD aimed at promoting Thailand as the food innovation hub of the Asean region.

• T has hosted the ‘3rd Asean Rising Trade Show’ demonstrating its ability to attract high-quality international participants. The bureau has provided

Financial support from the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) for international marketing campaigns to support eight trade exhibitions has resulted in a 30 per cent increase in the number of foreign visitors attending events in Thailand over the last two years.
