In Thailand English-language News for May 19, 2017, Newsline presenter Sandra Hanutsaha tells us about:

• Maintenance work is currently underway on the royal funeral chariots to be used during the funeral of the late king Bhumibol Adulyadej on October 26.

• Fifty members of the Public Relations Department (PRD) have taken part in a training session on how to craft sandalwood flowers in preparation of the funeral of the late king Bhumibol Adulyadej.

• National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) spokesperson, Colonel Piyaphong Klinphan, said on Thursday, May 18, that the junta’s most outstanding achievement since seizing power on May 22, 2014 was returning and maintaining peace throughout the country.

• Officials in the Southern Thailand provinces have met to discuss religious and cultural issues, as well as the implementation of the junta’s 20-year development plan.

• Deputy Prime Minister for Legal Affairs, Wissanu Krea-ngam, has met with relevant government agencies to discuss the admission of additional contract nurses into the civil service. Mr Krea-ngam said it would not be possible to comply with the Network of Contract Nurses (NCN) demands to admit all contract nurses at once, but rather that some 2,930 will be admitted each year over the next three years.

• The government is taking steps to hasten construction of ten railway projects across Bangkok through fast-tracked public-private partnership deals, with all projects scheduled to be completed by 2022.

Deputy Secretary General to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs, General Narwin Damrigan, Ph.D, said all of the metropolitan projects should be completed within seven years. For additional rail projects under the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) the fast-tracked process will be completed in nine months from conception to construction, instead of the 20 months required using traditional approval and implementation methods, he said.

• Heavy rain in the central region has raised the water level in the Chao Phraya Dam by 30cm (about 11.8 inches) over the past week. The heavy rains have also caused localised flooding, sweeping away more than 100,000 small fish from the Khon Kaen municipal fish breeding centre and damaged some corn farms.

• Privy Councillor and Justice Minister, General Paiboon Koomchaya, has represented King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun in awarding royal education scholarships to 12 children in the Southern Thailand province of Nakhon Si Thammarat who lost their parents during the floods there earlier this year. The scholarships will pay for tuition, schools supplies and living expenses until the completion of their vocational or undergraduate studies.

• Thailand will host the 12th Asem Summit between May 25-26 where the sufficiency economy philosophy of the late king Bhumibol Adulyadej will be presented as part of discussions on inter-regional cooperation and sustainable development.

• Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr Somkid Jatusripitak, has opened a business matching event between more than 200 Chinese entrepreneurs and some 300 Thai business operators as part of a Board of Investment (BoI) and Ministry of Commerce (MoC) collaboration with the Bank of China (BoC) to boost Chinese investment in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

• Former United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) Secretary-General, Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi, has urged the government to increase its economic cooperation with countries involved in negotiating the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) if it is reap the full benefits the free trade agreement will produce.
