In Thailand English-language News for May 2, 2017, Newsline presenter Dhra Dhirakaosal tells us about:

• In a ceremony held to mark the May Day 2017 Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha acknowledged the indispensability of workers in developing the country. While debunking claims that the ‘Thailand 4.0’ economic policy will relieve people of their jobs, he emphasised that the policy is aimed at readjusting the country’s economic structure to pave way for more employment and higher incomes.

• Deputy prime minister and Defence Minister, General Prawit Wongsuwon, has led a high level delegation at a meeting in Pattani Province to discuss progress in achieving peace and stability in the southern region, and to devise ways to develop the region’s economic potential. The installation of CCTV cameras, intelligence gathering, crisis prevention measures, and the junta’s strategy known as the “Triangle Model Prototype City Programme for Stability, Sustainability, and Prosperity” were discussed during the meeting.

• In response to criticism circulating on social media over the approval by the Thailand Cabinet authorising the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) to purchase a Yuan-class S26T Chinese submarine for Bt13.5 billion (about US$390 million), Royal Thai Navy chief of staff, Admiral Luechai Ruddit, said much of the information is wrong and outdated. He said buying a submarine has been on the agenda of many past administrations. He said the appropriate procedures were in place to ensure transparency and  traceability of the project.

• Deputy education minister Panadda Diskul emphasised has urged civil servants to continue upholding the three main pillars of society – the nation, religion, and the monarchy.

• Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister General Chatchai Sarikulya has urged agriculturalists to unionise to support career stability, adding that the use of innovation, research, and advanced technology in line with government policy will minimise costs and enhance competitiveness of the Thailand agriculture sector.

• Deputy Interior Minister Sutee Markboon has forecast a ‘Thailand’s best local products’ fair to be held between May 4th and July 24th under the themes of ‘forward greater innovation’ and ‘healthy nature’ will generate sales of about Bt200 million ($5.795 million). the fair will host more than 800 entrepreneurs hand selected by the Community Development Department (CDD).

• Thailand’s inflation rate rose by 0.38 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in April on the back of higher oil, instant food, and house rental prices in the central region. The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) predicts 2017 Thailand inflation will rise by between 1.5 and 2.2 per cent based on full year economic growth forecast of 3-4 per cent, while the Thai baht is expected to trade between 35.5 and 37.5 to the US dollar.

• Thailand’s Ministry of Industry (MoI) has teamed up with Delta Electronics Thailand to organise the second Angel Fund for Startup programme. Up to 30 would-be entrepreneurs will receive training in establishing a business, business administration, and developing a business plan. Thos who complete the training course will be eligible for funding of up to Bt500,000 ($14,489) in startup capital to help bring their ideas to fruition. The three most popular areas of business for startups are: Lifestyle solutions, financial solutions, and business solutions. Permanent Secretary for Industry, Somchai Harnhirun, said he expected the Ministry would provide up to Bt8.5 billion ($246.3 million) for tech startups over the next two years.

• The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will begin enforcing strict regulations for street food on Khao San and Yaowarat roads – the only two parts of central Bangkok where street food vendors remain – commencing May 31. Vendors will be required to wear barrier protection such as gloves, hats, and aprons at all times when handling food and clearly display prices in Thai, English, and Chinese.

• At least 27 people were injured on an Aeroflot flight from Moscow-Bangkok on Monday when the aircraft they were travelling on flew into clear air turbulence 40 minutes before arriving in Bangkok.

• Between April 28 and May 1 the Sadao-Songkhla Province recorded a large number of travellers taking advantage of the Labour Day holiday weekend to cross to go shopping and engage in events organised to mark the holiday. In Bangkok a Blue Flag Fair titled ‘Blue Flag Fair Labour Drives the Thai Economy’ was organised by the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) to provide cheap goods including household and food items.

• Khon Kaen Governor Phongsak Prichawit has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zhou Hongbo, Mayor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Municipality, China, during a two day visit by the latter to promote cooperation, culture, education, tourism, and sports between the two cities.
