In Thailand English-language News for November 17, 2017, Newsline presenter Sandra Hanutsaha tells us about:

00:42 | Singapore’s Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM), Goh Chok Tong, has met with Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at Government House and discussed five decades of bilateral relations between the two countries.

01:46 | Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has expressed his sympathy to the families of students killed and injured in a road crash in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. He has instructed the Ministry of Education (MoE) to find measures to regulate drivers and vehicles used for transporting students.

02:40 | The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has translated the country’s Social Contract and distributed copies to Thai diplomatic missions abroad to create understanding of Thailand’s reconciliation process. The Thai version of the social contract is available through various channels, including Facebook pages, and on the Ministry of Defense (MoF) website.

03:38 | The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has passed the new Elderly Persons’ Act into law. The chairman of the committee responsible for the draft, General Polawat Sirodom said that changes had been made to two of the draft’s six articles to make the law more relevant and to fit current social conditions.

The NLA also passed the amended Public Debt Management Act. Three amendments were made to the draft version, while five sections were removed. The new Act excludes debt owed by any state-owned enterprises, any asset management, or any credit insurance business that is not guaranteed by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) from being included in official Thailand government debt figures.

07:55 | Thammasat Economics Association (Tea) analysts have forecast 2017 Thailand GDP growth at 3.7-3.8 per cent and export growth at 10 per cent. The improvement is due to the better prospect of the global economy and the strong tourism sector.

However, they expressed concern that the grass-roots population and small businesses might not benefit much due to falling produce prices. For 2018 they expect the Thai economy to continue at a similar rate. Exports are forecast to increase by up to 9 per cent, while the they baht could depreciate.

09: 54 | The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has given businesses that have encroached on Sirinat National Park land in Phuket 30 days to remove their buildings so the land can be returned to public use or face prosecution. The area is about 28.5 hectares (about 70.4 acres) spanning more than two kilometers (1.24 miles) and worth around Bt14 billion (about US$430 million).

10: 56 | Krabi province is set to host an international contemporary art festival called ‘Thailand Biennale Krabi 2018’ in November next year. The festival will feature art pieces from 60 artists from around the world. Seminars and forums related to contemporary art will also be held in Krabi, Bangkok and other provinces across Thailand.

11:54 | Romklao Botanical Garden in Phitsanulok Province have introduced a new tourism initiative including sightseeing rides around the park, visits to the defunct Romklao War bunkers, cooking lessons, and overnight camping. 13:15 | Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chatchai Sarikulya said the recent 39th Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) in Chiang Mai discussed ways to increase demand and to raise the standards of farms products in Asean to increase exportability. As part of this, he said, adoption of the  sustainability concept of the late king Bhumibol Adulyadej Asean-wide was promoted to all delegates.

Thailand also proposed convening a regional Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing issues to make the regions seafood products accepted globally.

14:33 | Ministry Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) has welcomed the participants in the 20th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP).

This year’s SSEAYP programme begun on October 24 and will finish on December 12. During that time 350 youths from Asean countries will spend 50 days living aboard the Nippon Maru visiting Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan.

15: 47 | The 43th Asean Port Association (APA) conference has opened in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Vietnam with delegates gathering to exchange information and experience on developing and exploiting seaports in the region.
