00:47 | The royally-initiated Winter Festival in the Dusit District of Bangkok continues to attract large numbers of visitors. The festival is open until March 11 from 10.30am to 9pm (10pm on Fridays and Saturdays) and features exhibitions on important events that took place during the reign of King Rama V and King Rama IX. Traditional Thai dress is required to enter.

01:56 | The Cabinet has approved the draft law on the management of historical sites, ancient artefacts, and national museums. The bill will be forwarded to the Office of the Council of State (OCoS) for review before proceeding to the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) for discussion.

The draft law mandates the Ministry of Culture’s (MoCs) Fine Arts Department (FAD) divest the power to manage and maintain historical sites, ancient artefacts, and museums to local administrative organisations.

03:03 | The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is planning to establish a joint committee to deliberate the draft organic laws on Senator selection and MP election. NLA first vice president, Surachai Liengboonlertchai, said yesterday that he was confident the two organic laws would not be rejected.

04:27 | Deputy prime minister General Chatchai Sarikalya, chairman of the Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing Resolution Committee, yesterday led a meeting to acknowledge a road map for addressing six issues remaining in the Country’s effort to comply with EU standards. The matters comprise issues relating to laws, boating, monitoring and control of fishing, back checks, legal enforcement, and labour.

05:46 | Permanent secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Pasu Loharnchun, along with the director-general of the Department of Industrial Promotion, Kobchai Sungsitthisawad, yesterday presided over the signing of a memorandum of cooperation with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and the National Farmers Federation (NFA) aimed at developing agricultural SMEs.

This year some 55,000 people are expected to undergo training resulting in an estimated minimum 30 per cent increase in the number of agricultural SMEs and a 40 per cent increase in revenue generated by the sector.

09:35 | The price of raw palm fruit in Thailand is expected to reach Bt4.20 (US$0.13) per kilogram (about 2.2lbs) by the end of this month. Energy Minister Dr Siri Jirapongpan said yesterday that the volume of in-stock palm oil in January 2018 stood at some 470,000 tons.

Dr Jirapongpan said he expected palm oil inventory to drop to around 310,000 tons by the end of February, down from 532,000 tons in December due to government policies to promote palm oil exports and use.

10:49 | Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has told 20 of the nation’s top sugar producers to adjust the price of their stockpiles down to below Bt23.50 (US$0.75) per kilogram (about 2.2lbs) in accordance with the floated price of sugar, noting failure to comply may result in legal action being taken against them.

However, the meeting heard that underage purchases of alcoholic drinks rose to 88 percent this year from 83 percent recorded ten years ago.

18:13 | Thailand’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Tarnchaiyan Srisuwan, was yesterday joined by US Ambassador to Thailand Glyn T Davies for the opening of the Cobra Gold 2018 military exercise.

Taking place until February 23, the annual joint military drill will his year see more than 11,000 soldiers from seven countries taking part, with representatives from 29 countries participating.
