Those attending the opening ceremony of this year’s ‘Great Exhibition of the North’ in Newcastle and Gateshead, England were treated to a dazzling display of firework waterfalls, dancing water spouts, and the first large-scale drone (drone swarm) performance in the United Kingdom (UK).

Supplied by Singapore-based  drone swarm technology company SkyMagic and UK-based creative studio New Substance, the 100-drone swarm moved in unison to a specially choreographed music soundtrack written and produced by electronic duo Darkstar.

Onboard lights were turned off and on simulating shapes as diverse as a spinning strand of DNA helix, a spinning, rotating atom, the show’s logo, and a glittering display of star-like flashes, the drones not readily discernible from the ground against the English sky.

According to SkyMagic the choreographed performance is one of the company’s early success stories resulting from a new partnership as it pushes Singapore drone swarm technology into the European market.

Running through until September 10, the Great Exhibition of the North’ is a traditional summer festival showcasing activities, live performances, displays of innovation, as well as new artworks. More than three million people are expected to attend.

According to Hitomi Uematsu, director of SkyMagic, the two companies have been leading the drone-based light show industry in the UK for the last five years, with the first drone swarm in the UK a glimpse at where and how the technology is heading and evolving.
