00:47 | Delivering a keynote speech at Chulalongkorn University yesterday, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday called on students and teachers to play a key role in moving the country forward in accordance with the Thailand 4.0 agenda and the 20-year national reform plan.

Addressing medical students at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, the Prime Minister urged them to cooperate with the government’s policies, pledging to provide resources and support for the public health sector.

01:55 | Third Army Region Commander Lieutenant General Vichak Siribansop and Chiang Mai Governor Pawin Chamniprasart yesterday met with the heads of local state agencies and representatives of 16 civil networks to discuss the ongoing controversy surrounding the building of houses for court officials on 23.52 hectares (about 58.12 acres) of land in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

Two suggestions for resolving the dispute will be forwarded to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), and Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, for deliberation.

In Sukhothai Province a mass ordination of novice monks featuring 19 men riding on 19 elephants was held, while  Kanchanaburi Provincial Administration (KPA) collaborated with the Associations of Senior Citizens (ASC) to present certificates to outstanding senior citizens on the occasion of the ‘National Day of Older Persons 2018’.

05:27 | Minister of Culture Veera Rojpojchanarat yesterday reported that representatives of 20 foreign embassies in Thailand have participated in a project to make a video wishing all Thais a happy Songkran holiday. The  video is to be broadcast domestically and abroad.

06:25 | Director-General of the Department of Probation (DP), Prasarn Mahaleetrakul, yesterday chaired the launch of a caravan organised in collaboration with the Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation (DDDF), the Royal Thai Police (RTP), and the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) to promote awareness of road safety measures and traffic laws among Songkran travellers.

Prisoners charged with traffic law and drunk driving offences will be deployed to conduct social service activities and to facilitate motorists on the roads during the Songkran holidays from April 11 to 17. In setting what it believes to be the required standard, the DP will this year take disciplinary action against any of its officials who break road laws, or drive under the influence of alcohol. In the future driving records will be considered before people are appointed to roles at the DP.

12:42 | Nuntanid Thongsri, an economist at the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s Economic and Policy Department (EPD), yesterday reported on a study conducted by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) which ranked Thailand tenth in the world in the use of robotics in industrial applications, particularly in the automotive, electronics, and rubber and plastics industries.

The IFR predicts that more than three million repetitive and precise jobs are at risk of being replaced by automation and robotics in the next 10-20 years.

Meanwhile fellow BOT economist, Patcharaporn Lipipatpaiboon, urged the government to provide incentives for private sector organisations that provide skilled training programmes, while educational institutes should adjust their syllabi to better reflect market demands.
