00:49 | The royally-initiated Winter Festival in the Dusit District of Bangkok continues to attract large numbers of visitors. The festival is open until March 11 from 10.30am to 9pm (10pm on Fridays and Saturdays) and features exhibitions on important events that took place during the reign of King Rama V and King Rama IX. Traditional Thai dress is required to enter.

02:29 | Government Spokesman Lieutenant General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday that the current political protesters are a familiar group, but they have become coming out more often recently. He called on those protesting against coal power plants not to use fasting to cause conflicts in the society.

03:09 | The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is planning to establish a joint committee to deliberate the draft organic laws on Senator selection and MP election. NLA first vice president, Surachai Liengboonlertchai, said Tuesday that he was confident the two organic laws would not be rejected

04:01 | The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has kicked off a mobile advertising campaign with a specially decked out bus which will visit several provinces until March 24 to raise awareness of the law and the justice system among the public and state agencies.

05:50 | Minister of the Interior, General Anupong Paojinda, has held a video conference with all officials relevant to the Thai Niyom Yang Yuen project to make sure they are ready for its implementation.

The first round of visits under the project is set to take place on February 21, when officials will meet with residents to discuss their problems and to find solutions.

07:37 | Minister of Public Health, Dr Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, yesterday suggested five measures to prevent diseases caused by particulate matter and has instructed units under its supervision to remain vigilant for respiratory tract diseases, heart and coronary artery diseases, and skin diseases.

11:36 | Deputy prime minister for economic affairs, Dr Somkid Jatusripitak, yesterday delivered a lecture on improving public sector efficiency to bost Thailand’s ranking in the World Bank ’Doing Business’ survey.  The country ranked 26 in this year’s report making it the third ranked country in Asean. He said government offices should go completely digital within one year in order to further improve Thailand’s ranking.

Meanwhile, minister attached to the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Kobsak Pootrakool said that a proposal will soon be submitted to the Cabinet to amend some related laws that will help push Thailand into the top 20.

12:55 | The Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has predicted the public will spend about Bt60 billion (about US$1.9 billion) during the Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year celebrations, adding 0.3 per cent to the national GDP.

For Valentine’s Day Bt3.82 billion (about $120 million) is expected to be spent, while some Bt57 billion (about $1.8 billion) is expected to be spent for Chinese New Year celebrations.

14:38 | Newsline takes a look at the UNESCO World Heritage Sukhothai Historical Park which attracts many tourists, helping generate incomes for locals. Last year the government announced plans to develop the park with a budget of Bt1.1 billion (about $34 million), with an expectation of generating some Bt5 billions (about $159 million) in income for locals.
