00:44 | A series of four greeting cards hand-drawn by King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun and containing a 2018 New Year greeting and royal signature are proving popular with consumers since they went on sale on January 1. All proceeds from the Bt99 (about US$3) four-card packs will go to royal charity projects.

02:07 | Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said yesterday that he and the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) have never interfered with the justice system.

Explaining the criteria for his use of Section 44 of the Draft Thailand Constitution, the so-called ‘omnipotent clause’, General Chan-o-cha said the powers were only exercised for matters relating to national reform, national security, security in society, and narcotic drugs.

He said that all orders issued under Section 44 will be cancelled once missions in the government’s road map are reached.

He also said checkpoints staffed by police and soldiers at each need to be established on many major and minor roads to stem the flow of drugs into the country.

A series of career workshops with the capacity to train two million people is planned, with the government providing financial incentives of up to an additional Bt200 (about US$6.20) a month for those who attend.

15:19 | The Treasury Department is preparing to accept bids from investors interested in new special economic zones in Tak, Nakhon Phanom, and Kanchanaburi. Bids will be open from January 15, to February 9, 2018.

17:04 | A network of volunteers is hosting the 3rd National Conference on Volunteerism to exchange information between domestic and international organisations on volunteering and developing volunteer work.

18:01 | The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has advised people who have had their national ID numbers stolen to commit criminal activities to contact it for verification and assistance.

Additionally, Interior Minister General Anupong Paojinda noted that all banks have security camera footage to identify fraudulent customers and retain information on customer ID numbers that can be shared with the ministry for investigation.

18:58 | The Nong Chok District Office in Bangkok has launched a campaign for locals to trade in recyclable waste for garden plants, as part of its waste management policy.

On the first and third Fridays of each month residents can take their recyclable items to the office and choose from more than 100 types of plants, and vegetables. Those interested can call 02-543-2086 for more information.

19:58 | The Foundation of the Islamic Center of Thailand (FICT) and its associated organisations have held a memorial event for the late Asean secretary-general Dr Surin Pitsuwan who died last November 30.

20:58 | Around 380,000 devotees, many barefooted,  joined a chaotic procession in downtown Manila on Tuesday for a black Jesus Christ statue called the ‘Black Nazarene’, in one of the biggest annual religious festivals in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation.
