When fire, storm, or medical emergencies befall the citizens of Singapore the speedy help of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) ‘Life Saving Force’ (LSF) is soon on the scene.

A specially trained uniformed force operated under the Singapore Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), Singapore’s Civil Defence Force responds to fires, rescues people from life-threatening situations, and delivers emergency medical services wherever they are needed 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

One of the options available for male Singaporeans (and second-generation permanent residents) to choose from for the compulsory two-year full time  national service (NS) training mandated under the country’s Enlistment Act, a new video from the SCDF provides a brief candid glimpse inside Life Saving Force basic training.

Comprising a montage of photos taken throughout the training of ‘Life Saving Force’ intake 147, the video documents the path Singapore Civil Defence Force recruits take on their transformation from normal citizens to becoming multi-skilled individuals able to handle anything from unexpected births and raging fires through to mass casualty situations.

In the video above the new recruits of ‘Life Saving Force’ intake 147 are photographed at different stages of their training, from the compulsory ‘induction cut’, through to the course’s top achievers.

Trained by the National Service Training Institute (NSTI), the recruits undergo two-phases of training. The Physical Training Phase (PTP) designed to build strength and endurance with activities including aquajogging, endurance running, and strength training and Basic Rescue Training (BRT) where topics such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of automated external defibrillators (AED), and how to operate different kinds of rescue equipment such as the ‘jaws of life’.

At the conclusion of their training the recruits of Singapore Civil Defence Force intake 147, like those before and after them, are sent for additional training at Singapore’s purpose-built Civil Defence Academy (CDA), constructed in 1999 at a cost of S$96 million, where they will undergo more specialised vocational training before being deployed to Civil Defence Units across the country.
