The former Indonesian National Armed Forces (INAF) commander was attacked while visiting the Mathla’ul Anwar Islamic Boarding School in Labuan, in Indonesia’s westernmost province of Banten, on the island of Java.

In the video above Mr Wiranto is seen exiting his car on his way to boarding a helicopter for the flight back to Jakarta. Children and others gather as the car doors opens and their esteemed visitor prepares to exit.

Just as Mr Wiranto exits the motor vehicle a man can be seen lunging at him, propelling the 72-year-old minister towards the ground as he uses a backward stabbing motion to try and plunge a knife into his stomach.

As Mr Wiranto’s security detail attempts to block the man, he lunges forward again and Mr Wiranto falls to the ground amidst screams from startled onlookers.

Amidst calls of “astaga” (lit: oh my God), Allahu Akbar (lit: God is great), and astaghfirullahaladzim (lit: God forgive me) the injured Mr Wiranto is quickly bundled back into his vehicle.

A local police chief and at least one of Mr Wiranto’s adjutants were reportedly also injured in the attack, one adjutant reportedly receiving a stab wound to his chest.

After receiving emergency treatment for two deep wounds to his stomach at Berkah Pandeglang General Hospital in Banten, General Wiranto was flown to Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital (GSAH) in Jakarta where he remains warded tonight, reportedly in a stable condition.

Indonesia President Joko Widodo, who will commence a second term of office in 10-days following his April election victory, will reportedly visit his security minister tomorrow.

IS radicalisation blamed

Indonesian national police spokesman, Brigadier General Dedi Prasetyo, said a man and a woman were arrested at the scene.

Meanwhile, AFP news agency is quoting police as saying that the attacker was allegedly “exposed to IS radicalism”. If confirmed as an IS-inspired attack it will be the first assassination attempt on a politician in Indonesia.

Two Kunai, an ancient kind of trowel that is commonly associated these days as a Ninja throwing knife, were recovered at the scene.

In 1999 after the then Indonesian province of East Timor (now Timor Leste) voted for independence from Indonesia, General Wiranto was accused of being responsible for the deaths of more than 1,000 people in widespread violence that erupted following the poll.
