As of 00:46 GMT May 20 there was 41,968 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the 10 Asean member countries, an increase of 347, or 0.83 per cent, on the day prior. Of this 167, or 0.40 per cent, are classified as serious or critical. An additional 818 people were declared as having recovered.

Indonesia yesterday recorded the most number of deaths throughout the region with 30 fatalities taking the number of deaths there to 1,221, while 486 newly discovered infections pushed the active caseload to 12,808. After negative testing 143 people were discharged.

In the Philippines six fatalities pushed COVID-19 deaths there to 837, while 224 fresh infections saw the active caseload rise to 9,262, of which 81 are considered serious or critical. Following treatment 114 people went home.

Malaysia yesterday saw one death from COVID-19 related illnesses driving the number of deaths there up to 114, while 37 fresh cases and 31 discharges saw the active caseload climb to 1,218, of which 11 are said to be serious or critical.

There were no other COVID-19 related deaths recorded in any other Asean member country during the period.

Singapore sees fall for fifth consecutive day

In Singapore yesterday 451 new infections and 530 discharges combined to see active cases fall for the fifth consecutive day, dropping to 18,407, of which 10 are graded as serious or critical.

Five new infections in Myanmar and three discharges saw the active caseload there climb to 83, while two fresh infections in Thailand yesterday saw its active caseload rise to 120, with 61 people said to remain in a serious or critical condition.

There were no changes reported in Brunei, Cambodia, Lao PDR, or Vietnam during the period, with Lao PDR clocking up its 37th day without a new infection.

Since the first Asean case of COVID-19 was identified in Thailand on January 12 there has been 71,042 confirmed cases recorded in Asean member countries with 26,817 people, or about 37.75 per cent, of all infections having been treated and discharged.

In the past 24-hours the number of COVID-19 ‘survivors’ throughout Asean increased 3.16 per cent DoD, while deaths increased 1.66 per cent.

There has been 2,257 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Asean member countries, representing a case mortality rate (CMR) based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead) of 7.76 per cent. Based on the total number of infections the CMR is 3.18 per cent.

As of today, May 20, some 59.07 per cent of all confirmed COVID-19 infections throughout Asean remain active.

Global COVID-19 cases up to May 20

In the 24-hours to 00:01 GMT May 20, the number of new COVID-19 cases globally rose 1.94 per cent day-on-day (DoD) to 4,982,937 an increase of 94,813.

The number of deaths globally attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours increased by 1.43 per cent DoD to 324,554, an increase of 4,589, the majority, 1,552, in the USA.

China yesterday reported six new infections bringing the official case count there to 82,960, with 85 current active cases and 78,241 recovered patients. There has been 4,634 deaths from SARS-CoV-2 in China.

In comparison the USA yesterday reported 20,289 new infections to bring the active caseload there to 1,115,870. There has been 1,570,583 confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections recorded in the USA and 93,533 deaths. Only 23 per cent of all US cases have recovered.

Meanwhile, the number of people treated and discharged globally rose by 53,624, or 2.82 per cent, over the day prior to 1,958,308.

At the current rate there will be/ have been more than 6.2 million SARS-CoV-2 infections by the end of May, with some 380,000 deaths.

In the past seven days COVID-19 related illnesses have been blamed for the deaths of 32,103 people.

As of 00:46 GMT May 20 there was 2,702,461 active cases of COVID-19 globally, an increase of 1.47 per cent on the day prior, of which some 1.68 per cent, or 45,427 people, are classified as in a serious or critical condition.

Based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead), the current CMR is 14.23 per cent. On March 15 the CMR for completed cases was eight per cent. As a percentage of total infections the CMR today is 6.52 per cent.

As of May 20, some 54.20 per cent of all diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infections remain active, while 39.28 per cent of all diagnosed cases have recovered.
