In the March 17, 2017 edition of Newsline, presenter Sandra Hanutsaha tells us about:

• Thailand’s Government Public Relations Department (PRD) has held a briefing session with the foreign media on the national reform process in line with the government’s 20 year development plan, which any government elected in the future will inherit and be expected to implement.

• Thailand has received praise from the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) in Switzerland on its approaches to resolving domestic problems and restoring order in the country.

• Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has begun impeachment proceedings against former foreign minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul for wrongfully issuing a new passport for fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Mr Tovichakchaikul said the evdence being used against him had not been obtained legally and should be ignored, and that the person who had authorised the reissue of Mr Shinawatra’s passport was in fact a former permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

• The National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) has been told that 27 reform agendas with 42 sub items have been set to be completed before the end of this year.

• Forest fires in northern Thailand are continuing to burn, producing haze and distributing large quantities of dust particles into the air.

•  The first of five ‘safety zones’ as part of a trial in Southern Thailand is expected to be established within one month, with the government’s peace talks team seeking government approval for an additional seven development projects worth Bt774 million (about US$22.165 million) this financial year.

• Staff of local administrative organisations nationwide are to receive training in disaster response measures as a result of a collaboration between the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) and Suan Dusit University.

• Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital Naval Medical Department has demonstrated a hyperbaric treatment room providing high-pressure oxygen treatment for underwater divers, in addition to a number of general diseases and ailments.

• Chulalongkorn University University is holding an education expo as part of celebrations to mark its 100th anniversary. Established on March 26, 1917 by King Vajiravudh,(Rama VI), the institute of learning was named after his father, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who is widely credited for modernising Siam.

• Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce (MoC) is preparing to host this year’s THAIFEX – World Food of Asia, expected to be the largest and most integrated food fair in Asia comprising entrepreneurs from more than 40 countries, presenting more than 2,000 food products. Some 700 industry operators from Thailand will take part in the event, more than 500of which are from the small and medium size (SME) segment. THAIFEX – World Food of Asia will run May 31 through to June 4, 2017 at Impact Muang Thong Thani.
